Vasilikos Cements to create energy from tyres

xak.com

The Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment has issued a licence to Vasiliko Cement Works, enabling it to create energy from the burning of tyres and sewerage sludge. The licence has been issued on a trial basis until measurements can be made to assess whether this type of energy generation has a negative impact on the environment.

Many European cement industries produce heating energy from the burning of rubber tyres as part of the EU’s solid waste management programme. The Vasiliko Cement Works, which will import tyres for burning from EU countries, will earn £4 for every tonne of burned tyres.

According to the Environment Ministry, the temperatures at which the tyres will be burnt are so high that there is no question of dangerous emissions into the atmosphere.
